Redstone Is Really Just Computer Logic
Doors, traps and secret bases: learn AND, OR and NOT gates by building them out of redstone.
Nora 14 August 2026 5 min read
Every computer in the world is built from tiny switches that are either on or off. Redstone works exactly the same way, which makes Minecraft a brilliant logic lab.
Three gates to learn today
- AND: the door opens only when both levers are on.
- OR: the door opens when either lever is on.
- NOT: a redstone torch flips the signal upside down.
The same idea in Python
If you can build it in redstone, you can write it in code. Here is the AND gate as a Python function.
python
1def open_door(lever_one, lever_two):
2 return lever_one and lever_two
3
4print(open_door(True, False)) # False
5print(open_door(True, True)) # True
Try it yourself
Build a secret base door that needs a code.
- 1Place four levers on a wall.
- 2Wire two of them through an AND gate.
- 3Use a NOT gate on a third lever so it must stay off.
- 4Challenge a friend to open it without being told the combination.
